2026/27 pay status: the NHS Pay Review Body recommended a 3.3% consolidated Agenda for Change uplift from 1 April 2026 and the Northern Ireland Health Minister stated his intention to proceed. At the latest official update used for this page, implementation remained dependent on the Department of Health budget. For that reason, this calculator separates the implemented 2025/26 HSC scale from a 2026/27 simple 3.3% uplift scenario. The final NI scale could differ if structural pay changes are agreed.

Rates, pay-scale status and calculation notes

2026/27 Agenda for Change: a 3.3% consolidated uplift from 1 April 2026 was recommended. This page models a simple 3.3% uplift as a scenario because official NI implementation remained budget-dependent at the latest update used here.

Income Tax: Northern Ireland uses the England/Northern Ireland 2026/27 non-savings rates: standard Personal Allowance £12,570, then 20%, 40% and 45% rates. The calculator can apply the Personal Allowance reduction above £100,000 adjusted net income.

National Insurance: standard category A uses 8% between £1,048 and £4,189 per month, then 2% above £4,189. Category J uses 2% above £1,048. Category C is set to zero.

HSC Pension Scheme member tiers from 1 April 2026: 5.2% up to £13,259; 6.7% from £13,260–£28,854; 8.5% from £28,855–£35,155; 10.0% from £35,156–£52,778; 10.9% from £52,779–£67,668; 12.7% from £67,669 upwards.

Student loan thresholds: Plan 1 £26,900; Plan 2 £29,385; Plan 4 £33,795; Plan 5 £25,000. Main plans deduct 9% above the relevant threshold. Postgraduate loan threshold £21,000 at 6%.

This page covers both terms so the calculator is easy to find and easy to understand.

The calculator above brings the main recurring deductions together.

HSC Northern Ireland Agenda for Change pay bands

The implemented 2025/26 scale is available in the calculator alongside a 2026/27 3.3% simple uplift scenario. The scenario is useful for budgeting, but it should not be mistaken for a final published Northern Ireland pay circular. Structural changes or a different implementation decision could alter individual points.

*Projected figures model a 3.3% uplift and are clearly separated from the implemented scale.

Band 5 take-home pay Northern Ireland

Band 5 includes many registered nurses, midwives and allied health professionals. The implemented 2025/26 Band 5 scale runs from £31,049 to £37,796. A simple 3.3% 2026/27 scenario gives approximately £32,073 to £39,043.

The calculator estimates monthly pay after HSC pension, tax, NI and student loans, which is more useful than simply dividing the annual salary by twelve.

Band 6 and Band 7 HSC pay

On the implemented 2025/26 scale, Band 6 runs from £38,682 to £46,580 and Band 7 from £47,810 to £54,710. Under the modelled 3.3% scenario, those entry points become £39,959 and £49,387 respectively.

Promotion can also change your HSC pension contribution tier, so compare net pay as well as the headline salary.

Nurse salary calculator Northern Ireland

Nurses working in Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Antrim, Craigavon, Newry and across Northern Ireland can use the same HSC Agenda for Change framework. Enter your band, actual weekly hours and average additional pensionable pay to model your usual rota.

Actual shift enhancements can vary month to month, so an annual average is normally the easiest way to estimate them here.

Part-time HSC salary calculator

Enter 30, 22.5, 18.75 or any other contracted weekly hours and the calculator pro-rates the selected full-time basic salary. This makes it useful when comparing full-time and part-time HSC jobs or planning a change in hours.

The pension tier is then calculated using the resulting annual pensionable pay rather than the full-time headline salary.

HSC Pension Scheme deductions in 2026/27

Northern Ireland has its own HSC Pension Scheme. From 1 April 2026 the member contribution tiers run from 5.2% for the lowest pensionable earnings to 12.7% for pensionable earnings of £67,669 and above. The bands differ from the NHS pension contribution tiers used elsewhere in the UK, which is why a Northern Ireland-specific calculator matters.

HSC pension contributions are generally taken before Income Tax, so the calculator applies pension contributions as a reduction to taxable employment income for this estimate.

Income Tax and National Insurance in Northern Ireland

For 2026/27, Northern Ireland uses the same main non-savings Income Tax rates as England: a standard £12,570 Personal Allowance, followed by 20%, 40% and 45% rates. The Personal Allowance is reduced when adjusted net income is above £100,000.

For most HSC employees on NI category A, employee National Insurance is 8% on monthly earnings between £1,048 and £4,189 and 2% on earnings above £4,189. The calculator also provides category J and C options.

Plan 1 student loan deductions for HSC staff

People who received funding from Student Finance Northern Ireland on or after 1 September 1998 are generally on Student Loan Plan 1, so Plan 1 is the default option in this calculator. The 2026/27 Plan 1 repayment threshold is £26,900 a year, with deductions at 9% of relevant earnings above the threshold.

You can switch to Plans 2, 4 or 5 if another repayment plan applies to you, and add a postgraduate loan separately.

Estimating 2026/27 HSC backpay

Because the Northern Ireland 2026/27 pay position was not yet fully implemented at the latest official update used here, the calculator includes a simple gross arrears estimator. When the projected 2026/27 scale is selected, enter the number of months you want to compare and the tool calculates the basic-pay difference against the matching 2025/26 point.

This is deliberately shown as a gross estimate. Actual backpay can be affected by the final effective date, structural pay changes, pension contributions, PAYE tax, National Insurance, student loans and payroll timing.

Why your HSC payslip can be different

This calculator is designed for estimates rather than payroll reconciliation. A real HSC payslip may include unsocial-hours enhancements, overtime, arrears, sick pay, maternity or paternity pay, salary sacrifice, different tax codes, professional fees and other local deductions.

If your result looks very different from your payslip, compare gross pay first and then check your tax code, pension contribution rate, NI category and student loan plan.
